Melbournians are spoilt for choice when it comes to brunching. You can’t throw a stone in most inner-city suburbs without hitting a cafe serving up the most delectable brunching fare. And there is now so much more to brunch than just smashed avocado. International influences are now taking brunch to all levels of awesome across Melbourne.
So while everyone will have their own recommendations for the best brunch in Melbourne, here are 5 of the best, as sampled and savoured by yours truly…
1. Club social prahran
Club Social Prahran serves up exquisite brekkies, from the classics (smashed avo) to more adventurous fare (my favourite was the eggs hollandaise with crab. A-mazing!). The coffee is perfect too.
But the best thing about this gorgeous little spot is its local vibe. People come here to hang out, shoot the breeze and generally enjoy life. The social and friendly crowd reflect the ethos of the cafe owners, who set up Club Social Prahran to be like a daytime pub, where everybody knows your name.

2. archie’s all day
Great coffee is a given at Archie’s All Day in inner city Fitzroy. The brunch menu, on the other hand will delight and surprise as it caters for every discerning bruncher. Archie’s puts a modern spin on each dish (super grain granola anyone?). Not to be missed is the huevos sucios (dirty eggs), which takes your classic egg breakfast down to Tijuana, all jalapeño, black bean and chipotle mayo style. Perfect hangover cure. Ay caramba!
The crowd is hip and beautiful, and vibe is typically Melbourne. Get involved.

3. cafe brass
Newcomer Cafe Brass is proving itself to be one of Melbourne’s top brunch locales. It does all the classics, but it does them oh so well, like the breakfast brioche roll or the croquet monsieur with dijon béchamel and gruyere.
The interior is spacious, light and airy and designed with a particularly luxe feel to it. And the courtyard at the back, all marble tables, leafy and light, is the perfect spot to settle in for a coffee or two. They’ve only just opened recently, so lets hope they keep up the impeccable brunching experience!

4. top paddock
Top Paddock is on its way to becoming a Melbourne institution (if it isn’t already). Its quality has remained consistent over the years, as have the queues of a weekend (get there early!). The coffee is excellent, and the breakfasts are becoming legendary, particularly the blueberry and ricotta hotcake. Order it, close your eyes as you savour every mouth-watering bite, and thank me later. It is heaven in a hotcake.
Top Paddock, 658 Church St, Richmond 3121
5. cumulus inc
For all your power-brunching needs, head no further than Cumulus in the art and fashion end of the city centre. The menu is solid, coffees quality, and interior sleek and chic. My go-to for breakfast in the city.
Cumulus Inc, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000
