Leather trousers can be a divisive choice, sartorially speaking. I’ve found women either embrace them with the full frontal force of a seventies glam rock bass guitarist, or avoid them like they would a seventies glam rock flicked, permed mullet. I’ve always fallen into the former category for better or worse – I did have a pair of faux leather metallic gold and brown flared hipster trousers in the early 2000s, which nowadays I only wear for fancy dress parties (with a darling transparent leopard print body shirt and blonde afro wig)…
In more recent years, I’ve taken a more conservative approach to my leather trouser game, so my current leather trousers will never make their way into my dress-up box. The culmination of mistakes made and sartorial successes achieved, I present to you eight reasons why leather trousers are a necessity which will stand the test of time.
1. leather trousers can be worn at any age
Do not be fooled into thinking leather trousers are only for the under 30s (or for fashion girls for that matter). Leather trousers can be worn at any age.
2. leather trousers: basically an ELEVATED version of black jeans
Think about your favourite pair of black jeans. Think about how versatile they are. Chances are you wear them a lot. You wear them to work with a shirt/blazer/pumps combo. Out to dinner with a fabulous off the shoulder top. Brunching and running errands on a weekend with a luxe cashmere sweater. Just substitute the jeans for the leather trousers in each of the above examples, and you’ve instantly elevated your look to all levels of awesome.
3. they can suit everyone
This is true provided you stay true to your usual style and fit. There’s a pair of leather trousers out there that’s consistent with your style right now. For me, this involves a cropped, tailored and looser fitting style. Take a look at your favourite pair of tailored trousers or jeans, and simply look for a similar style in leather.
4. office apropos
NO! Yes. No…. YES!! Trust me, they can be worn to work. What I would do is avoid leather trousers of the early 2000s spray-on, airbrushed variety. Invest in a well tailored, high quality leather, add a luxurious silk shirt, season them with a sharp blazer and pumps, and voila! Instant work apropos.
5. leather trousers can be worn as a casual piece
While I never underestimate the elevation that leather trousers bring to any outfit, they can be dressed down with the simple addition of trainers and a cashmere sweater or hoodie.
6. they’re a perfect winter staple
They are so toasty! But, my only word of warning to any new-comer to the luxurious world of the leather trouser wearer is that there is a possibility of overheating in them. If you are running in and out of over-heated shops or department stores, for example, you may find yourself in a Ross Geller type of scenario. But, if you’re in an air conditioned office, or exploring outdoors on a city-break during cooler months, go hell for leather.
7. there are affordable (faux) options
Mango has come out with some fabulous faux leather options which are ideal for test-driving the leather trousers look. Baby steps.
8. instant cool girl status
Finally, if worn in a way that suits with your style and fit, there’s something undeniably cool about leather trousers.
