Winter Style 9

Winter Style Ideas

During the summer, I bemoaned the challenges I experience with my summer wardrobe. Now that the evenings arrive earlier, the nip in the air is no longer that of a playful puppy, but more like an angry Rottweiler. And the problem of dressing for hot weather seems like a walk in the park compared to the one I face now: how to dress for winter, but still maintain some semblance of not having given up on life.

It’s not easy to stay warm in the depths of winter and still look cute. Outfits tend to take on an overall potato-like shape. All those layers, all the logistics, all the extra Christmas pudding consumed. After learning the hard way during last year’s hideous arctic vortex that hit London for an extended period of sartorial pain, here’s my tips for staying stylish when the weather doesn’t want you to be. Sustainable Fashion: 11 Things You can do to Reduce your Fashion Carbon Footprint

Some pretty scary statistics are coming out lately about the hugely detrimental impact that the fashion industry has on the environment. They vary from study to study, but by way of example, it is said that fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world. 300-thousand tonnes of clothing goes into landfill each year. Around 1⁄2 million tons of microfiber (or the equivalent of 3 million barrels of oil) is dumped in the ocean every year, nearly the same amount as the DeepWater Horizon spill.

Although I’m not perfect in this area, I’m taking more and more steps to address the way I shop and care for my clothes to bring sustainable fashion into my wardrobe. Here’s eleven things you can pick and choose from to reduce your fashion carbon footprint too. Continue reading “Sustainable Fashion: 11 Things You can do to Reduce your Fashion Carbon Footprint”

Leopard Print

Ten Ways to Wear Leopard Print

Leopard print is everywhere in 2018. That Realisation Par midi-skirt that saturated our Instagram feeds this Summer triggered a leopard print invasion not only on social media but IRL too.

I have long embraced leopard print and made it a vital part of my wardrobe. Treating it as a neutral will do that. But in order to do so, I had to stop thinking of it as something only worn by older women with big hair who troll singles bars hitting on much younger men (not that there’s anything wrong with that). There’s way to wear it and then there’s ways to wear it.

Here are ten ways to wear leopard, and make it more flash and less trash. Continue reading “Ten Ways to Wear Leopard Print”

Office Christmas Party 3

Office Christmas Party – Do’s and Don’ts

It’s that time of year again. Tinsel is being strewn with abandon across desk partitions. There’s a Christmas tree in reception. HR has sent out the email with guidelines for appropriate behaviour at the office Christmas party. It’s party season!!

The office Christmas party can be so much fun – it’s a time to let your hair down with the people you probably spend most of your waking hours with. It can also be career-destroying if approached the wrong way. Never fear, Second Sister is here to share seventeen festive do’s and don’t’s: the wisdom garnered from attending office Christmas parties over the years in various countries, observing and engaging in the very best and the hilariously cringe-worthy of party guest behaviour. Edgy Florals 6

Making Florals Edgy

It’s that time of year when it is with mixed emotions that I venture into the depths of my storage cupboard to rediscover and welcome back my winter staples, while I bid a sad farewell to my summer clothes and, with them, pack away my warm memories of the summer.

Before you embark on your own emotional journey of the seasonal wardrobe-switcheroo, pause for a second and have a think about whether you need to pack away your summer floral dress just yet. With a bit of carefully selected hardware (and software – keep reading), you can give your floral dress some street cred and a more urban aesthetic for autumn/winter in the city… Continue reading “Making Florals Edgy”

Sock Boots 7

Sock Boots

When my friend said to me, “I can’t find any boots that I can wear with cropped trousers, keep my ankles warm, are dressy enough to wear to work and don’t appear to cut my legs short,” I said, “Challenge accepted.” After a couple of days scouring the internet and my wardrobe, I found the solution: sock boots.

So while this post is primarily about sock boots (more on that below), it’s also about being overly-competitive. It got me thinking, “Why do I see the most standard of comments as some kind of personal challenge?” I put it down to my competitive nature, which comes from being the second of four sisters, all of us close in age. And as my thoughts ventured down this road, it all came flooding back to me… the first date swim challenge! Continue reading “Sock Boots”

Accessories 3

Three Things to Consider when Buying Accessories

I am always attracted to any item of clothing, particularly accessories, that are sparkly and sequinned, feathery and furry, leather and luxe. Anything I can put on that is textured, shiny, or leopard print, then I’ll put it on and I’ll run with it.

So when I discovered these fabulous feather cuffs from the gorgeous design duo at Little Wings Designs (two sisters-in-law in Brisbane) I jumped at them, clutched them lovingly to my heart, put them on and basically reverse-engineered a whole outfit entirely around them. They just make me feel that little bit cooler whenever I wear them.

This got me thinking about accessories and the things that I’ve learned through years of trial and error when it comes to choosing accessories. Three things stand out: Continue reading “Three Things to Consider when Buying Accessories”
