Elevated Basics – How to Super Charge Your Capsule Wardrobe

One thing my personal styling clients often ask me about is the capsule wardrobe. It’s a concept that was devised so that you have up to forty interchangeable “basic” pieces that can be combined in a number of configurations, maximising your outfit possibilities. Purists would say that it consists of ten basic, and very hard working, pieces. But because I get easily bored with my wardrobe, I would argue that it consists of up to forty pieces. And those forty pieces result in more outfits combinations that I care to mention. You can read my complete guide to the capsule wardrobe here.

Once you’ve mastered the concept of your capsule wardrobe, there’s more you can do to take it to the next level. To super charge your capsule wardrobe. Its about looking polished, stylish and above all else, interesting. And it’s all about elevated basics…

The Capsule Wardrobe

I recently wrote about about the small steps we can all take to make our fashion habits more ethical and sustainable. One of them was to develop a capsule wardrobe. I promised a more detailed post on that my very topic – and here it is.

There are a lot of different interpretations of what a capsule wardrobe is, and I always work with my personal styling clients on developing one that works for them and their individual lifestyle. However, I’ve developed my own take on it: it’s purpose, the benefits, what it consists of and how to develop your own capsule wardrobe. Continue reading “The Capsule Wardrobe”

Bermuda Length Jean Shorts 2

Bermuda Length Jean Shorts

In recent years, I’ve not been a fan of shorts as a building block in my summer sartorial creations. I often felt a little frumpy, a little dumpy and ever so slightly plumpy in a pair of shorts.

The reason is that I used to wear shorts with tshirts and nondescript sandals. The result: I looked like one of those tourists who walk in groups following a tour guide who holds up an umbrella and narrates the tour via listening devices stashed away in non-ironic, non-Gucci bum bags (that’s a fanny-pack, to my US readers). You know who I mean. I just didn’t feel good about myself in such a pedestrian ensemble.

But this summer I embraced the bermuda length jean shorts (a la early 2000’s) and realised the error of my short-wearing ways. I took a blue sky approach and devised two looks that make the prospect of wearing jean shorts on the regular positively intriguing. One look is for cruising around town, like a boss. The other for elegantly lounging around a beach, like a mermaid with legs. Continue reading “Bermuda Length Jean Shorts”

Palazzo Pants 3

Palazzo-tastic

For a while now I have this image of what I’ll be like when I’m much, much older and well into my retirement years. That version of future me just doesn’t give a dam what anyone thinks of her and dresses incredibly dramatically. This future me probably has a string of younger lovers, a glamorous jet set lifestyle and drinks champagne by the magnum. She’s holding court at a poolside cocktail party somewhere in the Caribbean, wearing an intensely ruffled silk blouse, strings of huge pearls and beads, massive sunglasses, fluffy feathered high heeled mule slippers and a silk turban-style headpiece encrusted with jewels. But best of all, she’s wearing it all with amazingly luxurious and billowy palazzo pants. And she looks palazzo-tastic. Continue reading “Palazzo-tastic”

Leather Trousers 2

Leather Trousers

Leather trousers can be a divisive choice, sartorially speaking. I’ve found women either embrace them with the full frontal force of a seventies glam rock bass guitarist, or avoid them like they would a seventies glam rock flicked, permed mullet. I’ve always fallen into the former category for better or worse – I did have a pair of faux leather metallic gold and brown flared hipster trousers in the early 2000s, which nowadays I only wear for fancy dress parties (with a darling transparent leopard print body shirt and blonde afro wig)…

In more recent years, I’ve taken a more conservative approach to my leather trouser game, so my current leather trousers will never make their way into my dress-up box. The culmination of mistakes made and sartorial successes achieved, I present to you eight reasons why leather trousers are a necessity which will stand the test of time. Sequins leggings 1

Sequins – Just Bloody Wear Them

When my friends and I discuss what we plan to wear to any given event, be it a party, an interview or a hike, I always joke that I’ll turn up wearing gold sequinned sweatpants. And while it might raise a laugh or two, the truth is, I secretly would love to have a pair of sweatpants made of large gold sequins, and I’d want to wear them to as many life events as I possibly could.

I admit it: I’m partial to sequins. But generally sequins scream, “LOOK AT ME!” and carry more ostentation than most day-to-day events require. As a result, my most dazzlingly be-sequinned treasures used to end up gathering dust, barely seeing the light of day except the odd occasion when I took them out of the wardrobe to fondle lovingly and wonder when I might ever work up the guts to wear them. That was until I decided, “f*ck it, just bloody wear it.” Continue reading “Sequins – Just Bloody Wear Them”
