“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have” is a saying that has been used a lot in the last few years. But is it true, or is it just one of those banal motivational sayings that appears too often in your Instagram or Linked In feed? And if it is true, then how do you actually do it?Continue reading “Dress for the Job you Want – Is it true? And how to do it.”
A girl’s relationship with her favourite jeans is a serious one. The amount of time a girl spends in her jeans is akin to a long term relationship. And I feel like I have met “the one” with my trusty blue jeans. This is why I’ve penned a love letter to my favourite jeans, “Trusty Blue”… Continue reading “A Love Letter to my Favourite Jeans – Trusty Blue”
“You know the message you’re sending out to the world with these sweatpants? You’re telling the world, ‘I give up. I can’t compete in normal society. I’m miserable so I might as well be comfortable.” – Jerry Seinfeld to George Costanza.
About a year ago I fell off my bike and broke both my wrists. During the ensuing six weeks I pretty much lived in sweatpants. They were the only item of clothing I could easily get in to and out of unassisted. And let me tell you, there’s nothing like six weeks of sweatpants and not being able to wash properly to make you feel totally gross and pissed off with life. At the time, I swore off sweatpants – never to be worn again outside of an exercise-type scenario. Continue reading “Sweatpants – A Renewed Love Affair”
When my friends and I discuss what we plan to wear to any given event, be it a party, an interview or a hike, I always joke that I’ll turn up wearing gold sequinned sweatpants. And while it might raise a laugh or two, the truth is, I secretly would love to have a pair of sweatpants made of large gold sequins, and I’d want to wear them to as many life events as I possibly could.
I admit it: I’m partial to sequins. But generally sequins scream, “LOOK AT ME!” and carry more ostentation than most day-to-day events require. As a result, my most dazzlingly be-sequinned treasures used to end up gathering dust, barely seeing the light of day except the odd occasion when I took them out of the wardrobe to fondle lovingly and wonder when I might ever work up the guts to wear them. That was until I decided, “f*ck it, just bloody wear it.” Continue reading “Sequins – Just Bloody Wear Them”
How do I loathe job interviews? Let me count the ways. The stress of putting together the perfect job interview outfit is only part of it. There’s the cringe-inducing, blatant self-promotion (“I’m a real go-getter!”). The outright lies (“I’m passionate about financial software systems”). And how to genuinely answer the question “What are your weaknesses?” (“I just give and give and give to my job until there’s nothing left inside”).
We’ve all been there. Fortunately, the job interview process isn’t something that one has to go through too often. If it is, then I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe you should look into why you’re getting fired so much.
To help you get through your interview without succumbing to self-loathing, here are my three top tips to make at least one part of the process less daunting: what to wear. Continue reading “Three Tips for Planning a Job Interview Outfit”
I am always attracted to any item of clothing, particularly accessories, that are sparkly and sequinned, feathery and furry, leather and luxe. Anything I can put on that is textured, shiny, or leopard print, then I’ll put it on and I’ll run with it.
So when I discovered these fabulous feather cuffs from the gorgeous design duo at Little Wings Designs (two sisters-in-law in Brisbane) I jumped at them, clutched them lovingly to my heart, put them on and basically reverse-engineered a whole outfit entirely around them. They just make me feel that little bit cooler whenever I wear them.
This got me thinking about accessories and the things that I’ve learned through years of trial and error when it comes to choosing accessories. Three things stand out: Continue reading “Three Things to Consider when Buying Accessories”
So all the while I have been focussing a lot on basics here on Second Sister, I suddenly realised that I have shown so very little attention and love for the classic of all classics, the hardest-working item in your wardrobe, the blazer. How very remiss of me!
The blazer is the essential, timeless, go-to staple that can be styled for every occasion. If you don’t own one, then what the hell are you thinking?! Seriously!? Go out immediately (after reading my styling tips) and get one! Continue reading “The Blazer – Styling Tips for all Body Types”
