Los Angeles Focus: the Rose Bowl Flea Market

If you are fortunate (or strategic) enough to time your trip to L.A. so that it coincides with the second Sunday of any given month, then you are in for a shopping treat. Because the second Sunday of every month is when the Rose Bowl Flea Market takes place. And it is truly awesome.

The Rose Bowl Flea Market boasts the West Coasts’ best and most extensive vintage clothing and furniture stalls. For any vintage enthusiast or keen bargain hunter, it’s like your Christmases have all come at once. From vintage cowboy boots to a 1930s chartreuse evening slip gown (which, while spectacularly elegant, sadly didn’t fit me), it’s a shopping-related dream come true.

The market is located on the east side of the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, and it is huge. So huge, in fact, that it is easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of treasure troves you feel you need to trawl through. So here are a few pointers to help prepare you and  avoid shopping fatigue. Continue reading “Los Angeles Focus: the Rose Bowl Flea Market”

West Hollywood Cocktail & Hangover Cure 6

A Guide to the Best Cocktails and Hangover Cures in West Hollywood

On my recent trip to Los Angeles I based myself in West Hollywood, home to some the most fabulous cocktail bars in the city. I planned to write up my ultimate guide to the best cocktails in this very cool neighbourhood. However, I soon learned that I was going to have to find some pretty effective hangover cures if I was going to be able to get out there night after night and sample the best that West Hollywood has to offer by way of cocktail refreshment (all in the name of research). And what better place than L.A. to find the most celeb-endorsed hangover cures? Urban sweat lodges, IV drips, comfort brunches and so much more…

After much trial, and some error, I present to you my ultimate guide and ratings (out of 5) of West Hollywood’s best cocktail bars and hangover cures. Continue reading “A Guide to the Best Cocktails and Hangover Cures in West Hollywood”

Swimsuit as a Top

Swimsuit as a Top

In the first episode of the Netflix series, Love, the female protagonist, Micky, meets up with her ex-boyfriend at a New Age church service, wearing a red swimsuit with Mom jeans and cork heel wedges. She epitomised that cool, laid back California vibe with a nonchalance and ease that made me want to move to Los Angeles and wear swimsuits for every occasion.

It did get me thinking, though. The concept of wearing a swimsuit as a top – its a thing. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s not appropriate for every situation. But it can be done in context-appropriate ways outside of the sunny bubble of Los Angeles. So here’s my take on swimsuit as a top etiquette – where, when and how. Venice Wellness Spirituality

Wellness, Spirituality and Mindfulness in Venice, L.A.

Los Angeles has long been a magnet for the spiritual, mystic and new age. Whether it’s because of the laidback vibe, the proximity to awe-inspiring nature or some vortex of positive universal energy, I can’t quite find the answer, and it might be all of the above. But it’s that magic energy that makes it so beautifully unique. And there is no better place to experience it all than the boho beach side suburb of Venice.

It’s here where people are open and friendly, they look healthier, they talk about their chakras and when they hug, they literally and emotionally hold each other in energy-exchanging embraces that last just that little bit longer than most people would be comfortable with.

On my recent trip to Los Angeles, I set out to experience the New Age side of Venice, realign my chakras, get in touch with my inner child and experience a bit of mindfulness. Here’s what I got up to and where I went. Continue reading “Wellness, Spirituality and Mindfulness in Venice, L.A.”

LA Diary 5

My LA Diary

My work has taken me to LA a couple of times recently. Not one to let a busy work schedule stop me from checking out a new city, I made some time to get out there and mooch my way around town. Here, I bring you a quick guide to the places I ate, drank and shopped (and highly recommend) in La La Land. Continue reading “My LA Diary”
